Hollaaaaaaa. Here goes nothing.

CHAPTAH 1.

The campus of Dunkleman Academy was overflowing with new students. The freshman class had arrived for orientation, and to pick their first semester classes. Poised under the “Welcome Freshmen” banner was one Siobhan Magnus. She quietly eyed the course list she had been given, meticulously circling each of her choices in pencil.

“Let’s see, there’s Shakespearean drama, History of the Great White Way, ooh, I totally want to join show choir!”

“You know, that’s funny, I swore I just heard you talking, but no one’s here,” a voice piped up behind her.

“Just trying to figure out these classes,” Siobhan muttered quietly, waving the paper at the boy’s face. He snatched the paper from her.

“A drama kid… that explains the talking to yourself,” he mused aloud before shoving the paper back at Siobhan. “Call me whatever you want, but I don’t understand the point of drama, I mean, I’m studying 3D design, what am I gonna do with song and dance classes?”

“It’s more than song and dance, it’s history, it’s…”

“It’s song and dance, kid. And I’m here ‘cause I like to build shit.”

“Maybe you can help build the sets for the musical?” Siobhan asked eagerly.

“Yeah, whatever,” he dismissed her, walking away.

Siobhan went back to the class list for a while, circling ‘Notable Broadway Actors’ before she was again interrupted. “Was Alex bothering you?”

Siobhan looked confused, “Alex?”

“The guy that was talking to you,” the newcomer explained. “He seems nice enough, but he’s a little bit… forward.”

“Nah, he wasn’t bothering me,” Siobhan sighed. “But I don’t think he likes the drama kids too much.”

“Just let it slide,” he offered her, a wide smile spreading across his face. “Hey, speaking of slide, check this out!” He backed away and ran at her, expertly diving into a slide at the last second.

Siobhan stared in awe. “Hey, we could use a guy like you in drama… with moves like that?”

“Actually studying show choir,” he said, brushing the messy hair from his eyes.

“Great, I’m joining that class too!” Siobhan smiled. “I’ll need to find you again. Got a name?”

“If you’ve got a number,” he smirked. “I’m Tim. Tim Urban.”

“Siobhan Magnus. Now about that number,” she smiled. “What exactly are you trying to do?”

“You know, people communicate with these things called phones?” Tim joked. “It’s the latest thing, you should really try it.”

“If I didn’t know better, I would have thought that was a pickup line.”

“Oh, please,” Tim laughed. “If there’s one thing in my life I’m pathetic and hopeless at, it’s game.”

“Well, then it’s a damn good thing we’ve met,” Siobhan said. “I’m an actress, I can fix that right up.”

“Sure…” Tim replied, a bit skeptical. “So about that number.”

“Yeah,” Siobhan replied, taking Tim’s phone from him and entering her number in. “Just call it now, and I’ll have yours.”

Tim turned around. “I’m on it. Gonna go catch up with some friends now but I guess I’ll see you in show choir?”

“Yup,” Siobhan smiled. “Can’t wait.”

---

“Dance? I don’t dance.”

Crystal Bowersox looked over her best friend’s shoulder at the paper in his lap. “You’ll have to take it eventually,” she smirked.

“I don’t dance.”

“You’ve made that clear, Lee,” she sighed. “Fine, don’t take any dance classes this year. But if you don’t, you have to take a painting class with me. You like paint, right?”

Lee stared blankly at his innocently smiling friend. “Guys paint houses, Crys, not pictures.”

“You have to take a painting class eventually. If you take it with me, at least it’ll be bearable for you. Here. I’m taking this one. ‘The Still Life’.”

“Still life?” Lee raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t that like… pictures of apples? What do I care about a table with apples on it?”

“Fine,” Crystal scoffed, snatching the course list from Lee’s lap. “Here, the only other freshman level painting class is Models.”

“Models?” Lee smirked.

Crystal nodded, a smirk of her own forming. “Usually male and nude.”

“Uh, Crys?” Lee asked.

“Yeah?”

“Did I ever tell you how much I liked apples?”

“That’s what I thought.” She circled ‘The Still Life’ on Lee’s paper before handing it back.

Meanwhile, two students were sitting at a picnic table looking over their class lists. “I’d play in the band,” the blonde mused aloud, “but there’s no guitars in orchestra, right?”

The huskier of the two, named Mike, laughed and shook his head. “No, Casey,” he sighed. Reaching across the table, his hand landed on the paper, pointing to a class. “That’s what the jazz band is for. And they play for the musicals and show choir when they’re needed, so you might as well sign up for those classes too.”

“You taking either class?”

“Not this semester,” Mike said. “I’m studying a capella choir, you know, we generally don’t use instruments. That’s the point.”

“Come on, Mike,” Casey groaned. “You’re like the only guy I’ve bothered to meet here today, at least take something with me?”

“You taking beginning harmonizing?”

“Mike, I play guitar.”

“So? You’re taking show choir, they’ll probably force you to do some la la la’s or something.”

“Fine, I’ll take it,” Casey groaned, circling the class on his list. “But only so I’m not completely lost around here.”

“I don’t know why it’s required for me, I mean… my focus is a capella,” Mike complained. “Shouldn’t I know how to harmonize already?”

“They make us guitar kids take ‘Chord Progressions’, I feel you,” Casey sighed. “So far I’m in that, Harmonizing, Show Choir, Jazz Band, and Music Theory, and I have the musical circled for extracurricular. That’s what you said, right?”

“Yeah, did you hear about the new music theory teacher? I heard she was fired from her last job.”

“Really?” Casey asked. “Why?”

“No idea, I overheard it,” Mike replied. “I’m sure someone knows, word will get around.”

“Yeah,” Casey agreed. “Probably something lame, she stole a couple reams of paper or something. Can’t be serious, she’s still teaching.”

“True,” Mike agreed, dismissing the subject.

---

“I still don’t know why you aren’t studying painting with me, Katelyn, you love art!”

“Yeah, looking at it,” Katelyn retorted. “Come on, Lilly, I’ve been playing the piano since I was what, three? You’ve known me practically that long…”

“Yeah, but I still want you to at least take a class with me, I actually know you. I don’t want to be thrown into this alone,” Lilly groaned.

“Then go meet people,” Katelyn suggested. “There have to be other people taking painting here. How many painting classes are there?”

“Two entry-level ones, the rest are higher,” Lilly explained. Anybody who’s here is only going to be in one or both of those classes. None of the others.”

“Newsflash, Lills, you’re a freshman. So are you.”

“…Right. I still won’t know anyone, though. You have to take the classes anyway, take one with me. Just one.”

Katelyn sighed. “If I take a painting class, you have to take a piano class.”

“Katelyn, I’ve never played piano a day in my life.”

“So?”

“That would look just freaking great in a class with you, you’ve been playing from like the womb or some shit.”

“If you can force me to take a class, I can force you. There’s plenty of beginner piano classes, and I’m being forced to take them too, so you’re in luck. There’s this one,” Katelyn suggested, pointing to her course list. “It teaches you what notes are where and stuff.”

Lilly smirked. “It’s called ‘Fingering’.”

“You’ll learn soon enough,” Katelyn laughed. “Playing an instrument is one of the dirtiest sounding things you will ever do. Be glad you’re not in a wind instrument class, those have fingering and blowing. Or a string instrument. You’ll be playing more G-strings than you’ve ever seen.”

“Is that how you get guys to join?”

“Wouldn’t shock me, actually,” Katelyn mused, standing up when she saw the mass of students pass her. “I guess we’re handing in our course selections now, so pick fast.”

Lilly circled a few more classes before joining the crowd with Katelyn and handing in their course selections. They ran off the line, and toward the waiting car driven by Katelyn’s brother.
