Allison threw her suitcase onto the bed, promising her mother she’d be back to unpack later. Now wasn’t the time for that. She wanted to explore the place a little bit. After all, it was huge. She ran downstairs and turned to explore the kitchen area, when out of the corner of her eye, she saw a car pull up outside, the other teenager of the competition stepping out. She opted instead to run outside and greet her.

“Jasmine!” she shouted, barreling out the door and past someone standing on the porch. In her rush to greet Jasmine, she didn’t bother turning around to see who it was, or apologize for nearly barreling into him.

She leaped onto Jasmine in a hug, grabbing her bag for her once she’d let go. The pair returned inside together, Allison pausing in the doorway. “I’ll be right up,” she promised.

Jasmine took off up the stairs and Allison dropped Jasmine’s other bag inside before turning to face the man on the porch, arms crossed.

“What?” he asked, twirling the lit cigarette between his fingers.

Allison shook her head. “Matt, that’s disgusting,” she chided him.

“What, this?” He twirled it again, bringing it up to his pursed lips, startled when Allison’s hand reached up and grabbed it from him. She twirled it for a few seconds before stopping and dramatically breaking it in half, tossing it carelessly into a bush behind her.

He glared at her. “What the hell?” He pulled the pack of cigarettes from his back pocket. He was about to pull one out when the entire pack was fiercely torn from his hands, thrown into the bush behind Allison, and not-so-carefully stepped on by her heavy boots.

“No, seriously, what the hell?” Matt snapped, glaring open-mouthed at Allison. “I paid for… you just wasted…”

“I just took a step toward saving your life.”

Matt rolled his eyes. As if a sixteen-year-old girl knew better than he did. “I don’t need a damn lecture,” he hissed.

Allison could feel the tears stinging the back of her eyes. She hadn’t wanted to make him mad at her. She turned to go inside, picking up Jasmine’s bag and hissing “Disgusting,” over her shoulder at him.

He’d find her hours later, sprawled across the bed in Jasmine’s room, the bag forgotten at the door, Jasmine sitting at the edge of the bed attempting to calm the girl’s hysterical sobs.

“What’s the matter with her?”

Jasmine shook her head. “She got into a fight with some guy, she won’t tell me who, but I told her I was gonna kick his ass.”

Matt had never run so fast in his life.
